Pitcher fielding practice should be an important part of every team’s regular practice regimen. Pitcher fielding clinic is an activity which allows pitchers to practice fielding and making great throws to the various bases in situations that are different.
Our Pitcher Fielding Practice or PFP, as it’s called, requires all infielders and all pitchers. The activity takes only 7 minutes. We do PFP drills every day. This practice task requires two trainers to fungo or hit the ground balls, 6 baseballs, and 4 catchers grabbing up and alternating.
First Place – Pitcher Covering First and Bunt throw to 2nd Base
We start the action with 2 middle infielders report to their position. The pitchers will then split . 1 line will get over to first on a ball. The other line will field bunts and making the throw to second. This is the initial segment of the drill and we do so for 3.5 minutes without a beak. After each throw, lines will rotate.
The”cover group” functions on the ideal side of the diamond. The bunt cover on the side of this diamond to 2nd base set works. The line will run out toward base. All the pitching rubber will be set up with by the pitchers but will shade to allow enough space for both groups to work without distress or quitting in precisely the same time. MarCo Clay
Training Factors: Covering First
The pitcher is going to take a good angle toward the line and work up the line toward the tote. The catcher will shout, “get over” each time a ball is struck. The first baseman will convey with the pitcher to tell him if he’ll take to the bag himself. If the first baseman is slower or bobbles getting to a ball, the pitcher will set up and elongate on the throw. It is necessary that the pitcher prevents shading over into the base path to avoid a collision with the runner. The pitchers will operate from the windup.
Coaching Point: Bunt throw to 2nd base
The pitchers and catchers will produce a call. He will if it can be fielded by the catcher. If the pitcher areas it, the catcher will create a”two call”. Calls from the catcher and communication is an important part of this drill. The pitcher has to make a perfect throw each moment. Be certain the pitcher gets the right strategy to the ball and sets the feet prior to picking it up if he could. Fantastic footwork will save yourself time and make the execution of the throw simpler. The pitchers will operate out of this stretch. Pitching Mound Clay and Field Bricks for Baseball Fields
Set two -“Squeeze Play and Throwing to Second Baseball to Double Play”
During the second half of PFP’s, we’ll have the”right” side group field a”comebacker” floorball and create a throw to 1st or 2nd. The”left” side set will can a”do-or-die” play a squeeze play for 1 minute then cover home on a passed ball for the rest 2 minutes.
Training Point: Comebacker
The coach will call out where runners are before the ball is struck. The pitchers always work from the stretch. The catcher will create a”two call” if the ball is a double play ball and there’s a runner on 1st. If the ball is bobble or too slow to turn two, then the catcher will create a”1 phone” and the pitcher is likely to make a throw to 1st. If no runners on base the pitcher is likely to make a throw. We will vary the scenarios on several different days. The coach may call a runner on any base or all bases. The pitcher goes one and can check a runner at 2nd, assess a runner and go 1. The pitcher might have to go home with it in case the 3rd baseman makes a”4 call”. The pitcher may also turn two if the catcher makes a”2 call”. All infielders are utilized in this drill and”speaking” is essential.
Training Point: Squeeze Play – Cover Home
The”left” side group will may a”do-or-die” play on a squeeze play for 1 minute. The pitcher must charge the ball and use a”spade and throw” technique to get the ball into the catcher. The winning streak is at third and the drama is a”do-or-die” play with. Speed and precision are important. The catcher must finish the play using a simulated label.
Next, the pitcher will practice covering house on a passed ball or wild pitch. The catcher will recover the ball using a”slide by” pickup technique. The catcher must make an ideal tag spot throw to the pitcher. The pitcher will hustle, set up to the throw and complete the play with a simulated label.
Note: A great deal of action is occurring is that this 7-minute drill. If perpetrate just 7 minutes so the”sense of urgency” make the children actually bounce around and hustle. Every fielder getting a throw to produce a throw to the 2nd catcher inside their own drill and will measure out of the drill. The catcher will then throw the ball into the coach for the next rep. The catchers alternate each side every other moment. One day two catchers will function the”right side” drills and the following day they’ll work the”left side” exercises.
